The California Wine Country is traditionally known as the area one hour north of San Francisco and south of Sacramento in Napa and Sonoma counties. This somewhat small area boasts more than 640 wineries with knowledgeable staffs in tasting rooms to answer questions about wine-making techniques to wine pairing with food.

All wineries lining the major roads in the two counties have signs that beckon thirsty wine lovers. Hours usually run from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm. You have to be at least 21 years old to be served. There are tasting fees that range from $5 to $25 a person, and sharing a tasting is acceptable.

For first timers to this magical area, signing up for a wine tour is a must. A guide will lead you through the wine-making process, and you'll get to taste the finished products. Here's a tip: Major hotels in San Francisco, Napa and Sonoma have discount books free of charge that have coupons for savings on spa treatments, wine tasting and much more. Many wineries also have sun-splashed or vine-covered picnic areas as an added treat to your wine country experience. But as a courtesy, always buy wine at the winery you choose to picnic.

Early morning hot air balloon rides are a perfect way to kick-start a day in the wine country, and many tour operators offer champagne toasts after descending. So plan to splurge a little and take off for a thrilling voyage; both wine areas have companies that can send you aloft with eye-popping views of the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco skyline, redwood forests and carpets of lush grape wines. Kayaking with a guide on the Napa River or Russian River also is an option for first timers or experts. All gear is included.
