Facts on Broadway in New York
New York City is known as the theatrical capital of the world and the center of that industry is Broadway. However, Broadway is more than just the theater district that most people associate with it.
Location

Broadway is a street that runs through Manhattan and the Bronx. It runs from Bowling Green at the southern end of Manhattan to 262nd Street in the Bronx.

History

Originally built by the Dutch, Broadway was one of the first and main thoroughfares through New Amsterdam. The English continued to use it as such, and it still marks a major route in New York today.

Areas of Use

At its south end, Broadway runs through the financial district of the city and travels north through a merchandising section. After that, it continues north through the Theater District and then on to the Bronx.

Theater District

At 42nd Street, the famed Theater District of Broadway begins. This area is home to more than 40 theaters, with 20 of them on Broadway itself.

Major Attractions

Broadway is home to several major attractions. Columbia University, Trinity Church, Lincoln Center and the Woolworth Building all run along the street.
