The Best Tours in Alaska
As the largest and northernmost state in the U.S., Alaska has much to offer visitors. While many believe that the state is all glaciers and cold temperatures, there is much more to Alaska than its snowy image. It is home to several state parks that offer abundant wildlife viewing opportunities as well as plenty of trees and foliage. There are several big cities there, from Juneau to Fairbanks, and all the fishing villages in between. Finally, there are the state's characteristic glaciers that fascinate many visitors. With so much to see, travelers often take part in organized tours to make it easier to enjoy all Alaska has to offer. These tours expose visitors to a great variety of sites and attractions.
Glacier Discovery Train
One of Alaska's best tours is also its most affordable. The Alaska Railroad offers travelers an old-fashioned way to see the state's natural beauty while riding classic locomotives across the countryside. One of the most popular tours for visitors is the Glacier Discovery Train, which runs daily between Whittier and Grandview. Riders can expect to see many unspoiled miles of wilderness, with wildlife viewing opportunities throughout. There are many spots along the route where travelers can hop off for guided tours through popular spots, many of which are run by the National Park Service and are free. For just the cost of a train ticket, travelers will see spectacular hanging glaciers, mountains and natural wonders. The state is working to expand this line to include more stops, activities, and learning opportunities. Because of the state's harsh winter weather, this tour is only available from May to September. Cruise the Inside Passage
The Holland America Cruise Line offers a variety of cruise tours along Alaska's Inside Passage. This 500-mile long stretch of water is nestled between the Alaska mainland and the coastal islands. It protects ships from the rough North Atlantic waters while allowing travelers to see some of Alaska's most beautiful sites. Port stops include Ketchikan and Juneau, while cruisers will spend days at sea floating past magnificent glaciers and other natural wonders. Tours ranger from three days to two weeks, and an Inside Passage tour is considered to be one of the best ways to see the state. The Holland America ships feature comfortable staterooms, great service, and many fine dining opportunities. Holland America Phone: (877) 932-4259.
Denali National Park Hiking Tour
The Atlas Cruise and Tour Company offers a 6-day tour focusing on Denali National Park. This vast nature preserve is larger than the state of Massachusetts and offers a glimpse of unspoiled paradise. Tour participants will be led on hikes throughout the most popular sections of the park. They will have the chance to spot caribou, moose, and even grizzly bears as they wander through their natural habitat. In the background, visitors will have the chance to see the 20,000-foot-tall Mt. McKinley as it towers over the park. You'll stay in comfortable lodges each night, and have the option to canoe, raft, or participate in other outdoor activities in addition to your daily hikes.
