The Best Portland Restaurants

Even though what was considered the Pacific Northwest's best restaurant, Genoa, closed its doors in November 2008, there are still many great places to eat in Portland. Birthplace of the microbrewery and brewpub movement in the United States, Portland is also just a short drive from Oregon's and Washington's wineries. Restaurants are thus able to use local beers and wines as well as local foods and ingredients. Portland has restaurants for many types of cuisines and in many price ranges so everyone is sure to find a great meal.
Genoa's Heirs

If you missed out on (or just plain miss) Genoa, try eating at Bar Mingo, which is run by Genoa's pasta chef, Jerry Huisinga. Bar Mingo is not just a place to get a good cocktail, it's a place to get incredible Italian food.

Another former Genoa cook, John Taboda, has opened Navarre, voted the best Portland restaurant of 2009 by the local newspaper, The Oregonian. Fresh, simple food inspired by France, Spain and Italy is served in a cozy environment. There are many specials and the menu is ever-changing, but the staff will make sure that you get the best options available each day.

Splurge

Higgins is expensive, but it's worth it. The restaurant was one of the first to emphasize sustainability and the use of local ingredients and it still does so. The atmosphere is airy and cheerful, the menu is interesting and you can't beat the desserts.
