The Best Places to Travel to in the Summer
Summertime means packing a suitcase, loading up the car and heading out to see the country. With so many places to visit and things to do in the United States, it can be hard to decide where to go. There's the stark beauty of the Old West and the waterways of the New South, to name just two. Here are a few destinations in those areas to mark on the map.
Sedona, Arizona

Sedona has been dubbed "Red Rock Country" by folks enamored with the scenery. It's easy to see why. The city is surrounded by giant red rock formations with names like Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder mountains, and Oak Creek Canyon. With outdoor sports, museums and art galleries, and shopping, Sedona has something to do year-round. In summer, there is the Festival of Native American Culture in June, while the Red Rocks Music Festival in August adds spice to an already interesting mixture of activities. Consider a Jeep tour, or a visit to Red Rocks State Park, too. For shoppers, there's the Hozho District for hours of buying and browsing. See the Sedona Tourism Bureau at http://www.visitsedona.com for more information.

The Florida Keys

For a great road trip with a Caribbean feel, amazing variety and incredible vistas, take a trip to the Florida Keys. The Keys stretch 110 miles south from Miami. In between are more than 1,000 keys with names like Long Key and Duck Key connected by bridges and causeways. Each is a jewel. Key Largo is a well-known diver's destination, while Islamorada offers world-class sport fishing. Midway through the keys, Marathon Key offers relaxing resort destinations. In the lower keys, Big Pine Key offers boating in addition to fishing, snorkeling, diving and bird watching. Key West, the southernmost point of the continental United States, has romantic guesthouse retreats and nightlife along Duval street, or walk the beach for sightseeing. A directory of Key West guesthouses can be found at www.floridakeys.com/keywest/keywestguesthouse.htm.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah, Georgia, is considered the epitome of gracious Southern hospitality. This old city was the setting for the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," and the Clint Eastwood-directed movie of the same name. One of the major features of Savannah is the 21 parklike squares in the historic district. Savannah is also known for its ghosts. In 2002, the American Institute of Parapsychology named Savannah "America's most Haunted City," based on its history of fires, plagues, wars and voo-doo. There are many tours available around Savannah, including a movie tour that points out the film locations for such movies as "Forrest Gump," "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" and "The Legend of Bagger Vance." There are also ghost tours, historical tours and tours of the city's numerous mansions. To find out more, go to http://www.oldsavannahtours.com.
