Bass Fishing Tips for the Ohio River
The almost 1,000-mile Ohio River is the largest tributary of the Mississippi River and contains a large and active population of bass. Most anglers find the best fishing in reservoirs and tail waters, which are ample in the Ohio. Bass are also plentiful in the river's main body. Depending on the area of the river, a variety of baits are used. Guides stay busy during the season and the six border states offer fine fishing.
Pools

Locating sufficiently weeded and deep pools often produces some of the best bass fishing on the Ohio. Ohio River pools are ample in each state. Spinners, plastic worms and jerk baits are effective in pools for both largemouth and smallies. Pools ranging from 6 to 10 to feet are the most desirable, especially during the warm season.

Dams

The Ohio River is rich in dams which create backwaters full of flooded trees, dense shorelines and swirling deep pools. This, in turn, has produced a fertile and active bass population. Working hot spots around debris and timber from a boat is the best way to slay big bass in dammed backwaters.

Baits and Lures

Ohio River bass often seek refuge near shady pools and under flooded timber where they feed on crayfish, night crawlers and minnows moving along the bottom with undercurrents. Diving baits, jigs and a variety of plastic fare are often most effective near moving water. Working weed lines and shores with flies, crank baits plugs and senko baits are best in backwaters. Live baits such as harnessed night crawlers, minnows and leeches are preferred in the deeps.
