Attractions in Buffalo, New York
There's more to Buffalo than nearby Niagara Falls. In fact, visitors should make some time in their way to the falls to explore some of Buffalo's unique attractions, many of which are closely connected to the history and culture of the area and the state.
Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D Martin House
The Darwin D complex is a large structure designed by Wright at the beginning of the 20th century. Now a U.S. National Historic Landmark, the house was one of Wright's favorite structures and a magnificent example of his Prairie School design era. While some of the original buildings, such as the carriage house, were demolished in the 50s, they have been since then reconstructed and the house is now open for tours. Of special notice are the windows here, some of which are built of over 700 individual small pieces of colored glass. Educational programs and special events are also held here throughout the year. The house, located at 125 Jewett Parkway, can be reached by calling (716) 856-3858.
Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park
This outdoor museum, located at One Naval Park Cove and also known as the Buffalo Naval and Servicemen's Park, is actually a collection of vessels, cruisers and submarines located on Lake Erie's shore. The cruiser USS Little Rock, one of the original ships in exhibition, was decommisioned in 1945 and eventually refitted to be used as a guided missile cruiser. There are also one-man helicopters, hueys, patrol crafts and a Bulldog tank in exhibition. All equipment is open for touring and guided tours are offered for those who want a closer look at the inner workings of these military units. The museum operates between March and December and closed the rest of the year. The museum can be reached directly by calling (716) 847-1773.
Buffalo Harbor Cruises
The Buffalo Harbor cruises company offers a variety of tours around the Erie Canal and the harbor, from short one-hour sightseeing views to all-night party entertainment. The three most popular tours are the Landmark Cruises (exploring Buffalo's architecture), the Narrated Sightseeing Tours (exploring the canals) and the Historic Buffalo River Tour (about the importance of the river and canals in the history of the city). Boats can also be rented for private parties and corporate events. Kids five and under ride free and all cruises have snacks and drinks available onboard. The company can be reached via telephone at (716) 856-6696.
