How to Apply for a Passport in Virginia

Getting a passport in Virginia is the same as applying for a passport anywhere in the US. The person applying must fulfill the required documentation and be a US citizen to be given a passport.

Step 1

Find out the relevant information and most recent regulations. This can be done at the U.S. State Department's official website.

Step 2

Fill out the form. This can be obtained online or at a post office. For a passport renewal the form needed is DS-82. For a first-time application, it is DS-11.

Step 3

Fill the form completely with a dark colored pen. All information must be valid and verifiable if necessary. If using an online form, fill the fields and print the form. Do not sign the form if it is a first-time application.

Step 4

If the passport is a renewal of the old, simply mail the form and the old passport ensuring all requirements are met as per the form instructions. If it is a first-time application, you have to personally go to the office. Once you arrive at the post office or passport center sign the form in front of the official. Step 5

Include and/or take with you the fee applicable, photo and documentation with the application. Documents usually needed are social security, birth or marriage certificate, driver's license for identification and two passport size photographs.
