Amelia Island in Florida Review

Amelia Island, off the coast of northeast Florida, is like no other part of the state. It has glorious beaches, of course, and a unique environment, with great bird-watching and boat tours where you can see the wild horses of Georgia. The area is a haven for bicyclists and kayakers. The historic town of Fernandina beach is great for walking.
Wows and Woes

Wows
Sports and fitness fan will particularly enjoy the Ritz-Carlton, with its stunning golf course, clay tennis courts and extensive fitness center.
Woes
Like much of Florida, Amelia Island is extremely hot and humid in the summer. Wintertime temperatures are too cool for swimming.

Insider Tips

Take a walking tour with the Amelia Island Museum of History to learn about the island; tours are tailored to the age of participants.

Author's Most Memorable Moment

When we stayed at the Amelia Island Plantation, which has numerous environmental programs, we took a naturalist's Shell & Shark Tooth Hunt. My daughter found a huge shark tooth buried in the sand.

Bottom Line

The Amelia Island Plantation offers gracious service and programming for babies through adults; the Ritz-Carlton is more luxurious. Fernandina Beach has gorgeous bed and breakfasts.
