Alaska, the largest of the U.S. states, is home to spectacular scenery, amazing wildlife, and independent people. Alaska is an outdoor lover's paradise. It features activities such as snow sports, water sports, hiking, hunting, fishing, and birdwatching.
Getting There
Most flights to Alaska arrive in either Anchorage or Fairbanks. In addition to flying, another option to get to Alaska is by cruise ship or ferry boat. Ferry boats arrive in Alaska from ports in Bellingham, Washington, and Prince Rupert, British Columbia. For these seeking an adventure, the 1500-mile long Alaska Highway is the way to get to Alaska by car.
Getting Around
Given the state's vast size, the easiest way to get from one place to another in Alaska is by plane. If you have a lot of time, you may consider renting a 4WD vehicle or RV to travel around the state on your own time. A third option is to take advantage of the state's rail system. Take a scenic train ride on the Alaska Railroad or White Pass and Yukon Route.
Popular Activities
Outdoor activities abound in Alaska. Popular things to do include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, kayaking, birdwatching, and hunting.
Popular Destinations
Popular destinations in Alaska include Denali National Park in the interior, Katmai National Park in the southwest, and Prince William Sound and Seward in the southeast.
When to Visit
Most tourist facilities--including accommodations, restaurants and other places that cater to visitors--are open between the months of mid-May and mid-September. During this time period, the weather is warmer, and the days are longer.
