An Alaskan fishing trip is a good way to see America's last frontier. There is an abundance of opportunities for fishing in Alaska. Many packages and trips are available to meet anyone's wants and needs. The Internet is the best source to research trips as there is a wealth of information and services available.
Geography
Alaska is broken up into three specific sections: the southeast, south central and interior. The majority of fishing trips take place in the south central portion of Alaska. Anchorage is centrally located in the south central portion and is home to most domestic flights into Alaska. The Kenai River is just a short drive from Anchorage, hosting some of the best salmon fishing in the World. The interior and southeast are to remote to be popular. Expensive float planes are required.
Types
There are several types of fishing trips offered in Alaska. The most typical is a fishing package where lodging, meals and guided fishing trip are included in one price. This is by far the most popular style as it's the most economical and you have a professional guiding you to fish. Unguided fishing trips leave you to venture out on your own to catch fish. There is a wealth of information on where to fish, but it can be daunting task to actually catch fish as Alaska is so large.
Gear
Fishing gear is included in most fishing trip packages in Alaska. Gear is too hard to bring on an airline without getting damaged. Also fishing tackle is often heavier built and unique to Alaska. When booking a trip, make sure all gear and baits are included or can be rented to make the travel easier. Guides will let you bring your own tackle if you insist. For an unguided fishing trip you must bring your own gear, or it can be rented or bought in the larger towns.
Considerations
Fishing trip packages will often have several other opportunities unique to the location. Day trips or excursions that can be added onto your package that are often not fishing related, but are sightseeing or shopping tours. The fishing industry in Alaska is shifting to cater to family trips. Lodges will offer fishing packages as well as several others for non fishing guests.
Warning
Alaska's climate changes often and very suddenly. Plan accordingly when departing on a fishing trip. Pack plenty of warm clothes and coats even though you are visiting in the summer. Temperatures can fall into the 40's in the summer and even colder in the spring and fall. Rain gear is also necessity when fishing in Alaska. Rain gear will protect from the elements and spray from the boat if fishing on the ocean.
