Bar Harbor, Maine may not be as popular or as well-known to tourists as Disney World, but it has some exciting family activities nonetheless. In Bar Harbor, your family can experience nature in many ways, from visiting a national park to taking in the history of the place in two unusual museums.
Acadia National Park
The park is filled with dramatic rocky shores and all kinds of wildlife. Rent a cottage or stay nearby in town. Whatever you do, the views from Acadia's shoreline are something to behold. Hike, camp, gaze at the mountains and forests or get to know the park better with a ranger-led tour.
Abbe Museum
The Abbe Museum lets you soak in Maine's rich Native American heritage. Permanent exhibits like "Layers of Time," art demonstrations, a large museum shop featuring jewelry and artwork and occasional festivals make it the best Native American museum in the region.
Whale Museum
The Bar Harbor Whale Museum was founded in 1991 to teach visitors about whales found off the coast of Maine. Kids will especially love learning about whales and their habitats. Admission is free. Real whale skeletons and exhibits on whale anatomy are part of the fun.
