The Republic of Guatemala, known simply as Guatemala, is a Central American country bordering the southern end of
Mexico. Declared independent of Spain in 1821, Guatemala has a vibrant culture and a growing agricultural economy. Individuals wishing to obtain a Guatemalan passport for entry into the country must meet and follow certain governmental requirements and regulations.
Original birth certificate and a photocopy of the document
Applicants must be in possession of their original birth certificate, showing their name, birth date and location of birth. Make a clear, readable photocopy of the original document and bring both papers when you apply for the passport.
Original Cedula de Vecindad (Certificate of Residence) and a photocopy of the document
Applicants must be residents of the country and prove it with an original copy of their Cedula de Vecindad. This is a government document certifying that they are residents of Guatemala. Make a photocopy of the original certificate and bring it with you when applying. If you do not have an original Cedula de Vecindad, you may get one from the nearest Guatemalan city hall. This certificate is not available at the Guatemala consulate in the United States.
Funds to pay for application fees
Applicants must bring sufficient funds via a certified check, money order, cash or credit card. It costs $65 USD to apply for a passport and $80 USD for the consulate processing fee.
Ability to apply in person
Applicants must apply in person. They may present themselves and the necessary documents at their local city hall in Guatemala or at the Guatemala U.S. consulate in Atlanta, Georgia.
