Backpacking through Brazil is a dream for many young people. These travelers hope to see Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, and the beautiful views from the smaller towns located along the coast. Travel in Brazil does not have to be costly, but you need to take certain precautions when dealing with your money.
Precautions
Keep your money in a secure place while backpacking through Brazil and never flash large sums of money in public. Brazil has one of the highest crime rates in the world and violence is fairly common. The only way to protect yourself is to keep your money with you at all times and keep an eye on it. Never leave money or valuables in your hotel room.
Debit Cards
Debit cards are an excellent way to save money and protect yourself while backpacking through Brazil. Most stores, attractions and restaurants accept debit cards from the United States and other countries. The use of these cards reduces the chances of having a large sum of cash stolen. You need only withdraw a small amount of money from your bank account every day to cover some costs and pay the rest with your debit card, where accepted.
Credit Cards
Prior to leaving on a backpacking trip to Brazil, travelers should request a pin number from their credit card company. With a pin number you can use your credit card as a debit card in case you lose your debit card or it is stolen.
Traveler's Checks
Traveler's checks such as those from American Express is a convenient way of using money in Brazil because they're accepted at many places. You can turn the checks infor cash at banks in Rio de Janeiro and many other cities. The best thing about using traveler's checks is that they often come with insurance, which provides an added layer of protection.
