Information About Lake Titicaca
Located 12,000 feet high on the border between Peru and Bolivia, Lake Titicaca was a sacred site for the ancient Incas. The lake is over 188 miles long and nearly 50 miles wide, with a maximum depth of over 900 feet. Activities cluster around viewing the town of Puno in Peru, cruising the lake, exploring Incan ruins and visiting the islands.
Getting there
You can fly from Lima and Cuzco to the town of Juliaca, which is about 25 miles from Puno. Then take the $5 bus or $20 taxi to Puno.
Accommodations
Rooms with private bath in Puno range from $9 for a basic single to $70 for a modern double near the city center.
Islands
The lake boasts over 30 natural and man-made islands. The Floating Islands are made from local totora reeds and are home to the Uros people, who weave souvenirs. For visitors.
Island of the Sun
The biggest island on the lake hosts 180 Incan ruins and the Gold Museum, full of Incan treasures.
Boat Tours
There's no shortage of tours across the lakes or to the various islands. They run from $10 for a short 3-hour tour up to $25 for a typical overnight with stays at local families.
