Huaraz Climate & Weather
Huaraz is the capital of the Ancash Region of Peru. This South American city is located high in the Andes Mountains. Situated in the Callejon de Huaylas Valley, Huaraz is known for its scenic mountain peaks. The city sits at the base of the Cordillera Blanca Mountain Range, more than 10,000 feet above sea level. Visitors should plan their trips to Huaraz around the rainy season, and make sure to pack plenty of warmer clothing for the cold nights.
Summer Temperatures
Huaraz is located in the Southern Hemisphere, so the summer months technically last from December to March. Temperatures during this time are warm but not oppressive. The average high is around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The average low is around 70 degrees, although it can get down past 60 degrees on colder nights because of the altitude.
Winter Temperatures
The winter months in Huaraz are technically between June and September. Temperatures drop off significantly during these months. The average high is around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. The average low hovers near 45 degrees, but the temperature does occasionally drop below freezing.
Summer Precipitation
Summer is the rainy season in Huaraz, Peru. Precipitation averages around 12 inches of rainfall per month. Showers are generally light, and take place in the early morning or later in the evening.
Winter Precipitation
May through September are especially dry months in the Andes of Peru. Huaraz is no exception. July is the driest month of the year, with hardly any precipitation. There are light rains occasionally in May and September, and minimal snow flurries fall when temperatures drop below freezing.
The Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit Huaraz is between May and September. Locals refer to this period as the "Andean Summer," because of the relatively warm weather and lack of precipitation. Clear skies and mild temperatures make this the ideal time to hike around Huaraz and take in the natural beauty here.
