History
Lake Titicaca is said to have strong Incan roots, and is considered a sacred place for the Inca civilization. Manco Capac, the first Incan king, was born here.
Geography
Located near the border of Bolivia and Peru, Lake Titicaca sits nearly 4,000 meters above sea level. Many cities surround the lake, and there are islands within it as well.
Size
Lake Titicaca is 190 kilometers long, 80 kilometers wide and, at its deepest point, 284 meters deep.
Theories/Speculation
According to Incan mythology, Lake Titicaca is the point from which the world was created. Viracocha, an Incan god, is said to have emerged from the lake and created the sun, stars and first people.
Fun Fact
The best place to stay when visiting Lake Titicaca is Puno, a town located on the Peruvian side of the lake. Puno is the capital of folklore in Peru, and has many attractions for visitors, such as the Machu Picchu.
