The Climate & Weather in Cajamarca
Cajamarca is a city in the northern Andes highlands of Peru and sits nearly 9,000 feet above sea level. During the Inca empire, Cajamarca was an important settlement coveted by the Spanish conquistadors. They captured Cajamarca and the Inca emperor in 1532. Known for its natural hot springs, fertile soil and mild weather, this South American city's equatorial climate is warm, dry and sunny.
Summer Temperatures
Because it lies below the equator, summer in Cajamarca runs from December to March. The average high during the summer months is about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. As it cools off at night, the average low hovers around 50 degrees.
Winter Temperatures
Because it is close to the equator, Cajamarca's temperatures remain fairly constant year round. Winters, running from June to September, are mild here, with average temperatures reaching a high of 68 degrees Fahrenheit. The average low is around 42 degrees.
Summer Precipitation
Summer is the rainy season in Cajamarca. The city averages roughly 15 rainy days per month during the summer, and February and March are particularly wet. The rainfall usually consists of light showers.
Winter Precipitation
Winter in Cajamarca is dry and sunny, and July and August see virtually no precipitation. The city averages just four rainy days per month during the summer season, although the rains pick back up slightly in September.
Best Time To Visit
June to August is the best time to visit Cajamarca in terms of weather. The winter season here is nearly as warm as summer. Comfortable temperatures and little rainfall make it a good time to sight-see and travel around the region.
