Children's Activities in Santos, Brazil
Located due south of Rio de Janeiro, the city of Santos is
South America's largest seaport not to mention a growing tourist mecca. In addition to industrial and shipping complexes where exports include coffee, steel, oil, cars, cotton and even bananas, Santos boasts many family-friendly activities that are suitable for children. Highlights include an aquarium filled with fish unique to the Amazon, and a soccer memorial in honor of Santos' native son and soccer legend Pele.
Santos Municipal Aquarium
The Santos Municipal Aquarium, located on the Avenida Bartolomeu de Gusmao-Ponta da Praia, is home to seals, sharks and fish native to the Amazonian river basin. It boasts a petting tank and more than 200 species of fresh and saltwater fish native to Brazilian river and the Atlantic ocean. It opened in 1945 as the first public aquarium in Brazil. Approximately 500,000 people per year pass through, making it the second most visited park in the state of Sao Paolo.
The aquarium is closed Mondays, but open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
A Day at the Beach
There are many fabulous beaches in and around Santos that can provide your child or children with hours of fun. The climate in Santos is almost always suitable for beach swimming, but is definitely more hot and humid from November to March, when you are more likely to encounter rain.
Aparecida Beach is known as a child-friendly beach. The focal point of this beach is Fonte do Sapo, or Frog Fountain, where children are frequently seen playing, roller skating or bicycling.
Gonzaga Beach, located near many of the most popular hotels, is the last stop on the Santos bus line. Bandeiras Square, located adjacent to Gonzaga beach, has a tourist information post that is staffed with brochures as well as with an official to answer any of your questions.
Urbano Caldeira Stadium
If your children love to play soccer, then you won't want to miss checking out the Urbano Caldeira Stadium where the Santos soccer team has made its home since 1931. Many Brazilian soccer greats, including Pele, played here. In fact, the club's "Memorial das Conquistas" or Accomplishments Memorial features a tribute to Pele and many others.
Tours include a visit to the Trophy Room--which includes not only soccer trophies but other sports awards given to Brazilian athletes in volleyball, basketball and martial arts.
The Urbano Caldeira Stadium is located at 77 Princesa Izabel Street in Santos.
