Chiclayo Beaches
Chiclayo is a beautiful coastal town in the northern part of Peru. This South American city has plenty of sites tourists like to visit. It also has a few nice
beaches. The best months to head to the
beach are January and February, since this Peruvian city is located south of the equator. It may be a bit more crowded at this time, but the weather is much better. These are the warmest months, and there is plenty of sun to make for a great day at the beach. Chiclayo has a lot to offer, and the scenic coastline is just one more reason to visit this region of Peru.
Pimentel Beach
Pimentel
Pimentel Beach is a popular destination for tourists and locals in Chiclayo. Located approximately 15 km southwest of the city, this beach resort area is best known for its delicious seafood and exciting surf scene. Some major surf competitions are held here in February. The fishing industry is alive and well in this coastal town as well, and many of the local fishermen still use small reed boats. These traditional vessels are called caballitos del mar, and tourists often spend some of their time observing the Peruvian fishing methods practiced by these natives of Chiclayo. There are also several restaurants and small souvenir shops.
Santa Rosa Beach
Santa Rosa
Also to the southwest of the city of Chiclayo is another beach called Santa Rosa. This is a lively little fishing village. It is quite close to Pimentel. Santa Rosa Beach is known for its authentic caballitos reed boats as well. People who come to Santa Rosa Beach should not expect to find pristine white sand and major tourist attractions, however. The sand is brown, and old piers are the only structures that highlight the coast. Santa Rosa is known for its Chica, a tasty corn beer brewed by the locals. Fresh seafood is also readily available. If you are looking for surfing options, El Faro is located close by.
Getting to the Beaches
It is fairly easy to get to either of these beaches in Chiclayo. Once you are in the city itself, get a taxi cab. Make sure the taxi is registered in order to ensure your safety. Tell the driver which beach you want to go to, and he will get you there in short order. It should not cost more than US$7 (20 Peruvian Soles) to take a taxi to Santa Rosa Beach or Pimentel. Go early in the day so you have time to enjoy the beach and make it back to town. Another option is to stay at one of the hotels or hostels located at these two beaches.
