Facts on the Hebrew Language
Modern Hebrew or Ivrit was declared the official language of Israel in 1948. Earlier forms of the language existed including Biblical and Mishnaic Hebrew. The Hebrew alphabet has twenty two characters.
Reading the Language
Hebrew is read from right to left, rather than left to right as is common in the Western world. It is written in horizontal lines.
Numbers
Hebrew has no characters representing numbers. When numbers are required Western numbers are used.
Subject - Verb
Ancient Hebrew was spoken with the verb placed before the subject. Modern Hebrew places the subject first.
Vowels
There are no vowels in the Hebrew language. Small symbols are used in some writings to represent where vowels should be.
Words
Hebrew has a large number of three consonant or triconsonantal words.
