Is it Safe to Travel to Israel?
Containing the holiest sites of Judaism, Islam and Christianity, Israel has long been a favorite tourist destination. But throughout its history, the region has only known brief periods of peace amid lengthier times of struggle. While the violence is often indiscriminate, it can be avoided, provided you exercise caution.
Current Conditions

Palestinians believe they were unfairly displaced during Israel's founding. This has led to repeated violence, not excluding suicide attacks, kidnappings and severe Israeli retaliation.

Government Warnings

The U.S. State Department suggests that American visitors avoid the Palestinian territories. However, the West Bank contains many historic Christian sites, including Jesus' birthplace.

Tourists Welcome

While they may disagree vehemently on politics, Israel's population is tolerant and extremely diverse. Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs will always welcome foreigners, as both economies rely heavily on tourism for survival.

Other Considerations

It is helpful to watch the news before considering such a visit. If conditions are particularly tense, consider rescheduling your trip.

Bottom Line

Israelis do not live in constant fear, and your visit will not be overtaken by safety concerns. Provided you take basic precautions, you'll soon find yourself at ease in one of the world's most historic regions.
