The Seven Wonders of the World were built in the Mediterranean region over a period of approximately 2,000 years. These structures and statues illustrated the wealth, ingenuity and design aesthetics of the Middle Ages.
History
The list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World was compiled in approximately the fifth or sixth century B.C.
Types
The Seven Wonders of the World are: the Great Pyramid of Giza, the statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Tomb of Maussollos at Halicarnassus, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Lighthouse of Alexandria and the Colossus at Rhodes.
Locations
Of the Seven Wonders, two each were located in Egypt, Greece and Turkey, with one in Iraq. Six of the seven wonders no longer exist.
Significance
The Seven Wonders were a combination of art and architecture, a celebration of the achievements of man in early times.
New Wonders
In 2007, the New Seven Wonders of the World were named after an online poll that drew more than 100 million votes.
