Located between Israel and Jordan in the
Middle East, the Dead Sea is one of the most easily noted bodies of water in the world. Sure, it has name recognition but how much does anyone really know about it?
Why Do They Call It the Dead Sea?
The Dead Sea does not kill people, contrary to popular belief. It is called the Dead Sea because nothing lives in it. No plants, no animals--nothing. The salt concentration is too high to support life.
No Floaties Needed
One of the coolest things about the Dead Sea is that humans are so buoyant in the water. The salt concentration is so high that people can just kick back and relax in the water. As a matter of fact, it makes it kind of hard to swim at all--so you don't have to be a swim champ to survive in this water.
Cosmetic Properties
Many people believe that the mud found in the Dead Sea has healing and cosmetic properties. Dead Sea salt and mud products are sold all over the world.
High in Sodium
The water in the Dead Sea is six times saltier than ocean water.
That's Not Sand...
It may look like sand on the shores of the Dead Sea, but it's actually salt. Salt is so plentiful in this lake that it piles up on the bottom of the sea floor and collects on the shores. This salt is used in many cosmetic products.
The Lowest Point...
The Dead Sea is the lowest point in the world. It is 1,385 feet below sea level.
