At one time, San Carlos was a mellow
beach town along the Sea of Cortez. These days, life is bustling in San Carlos, partially due to its proximity to the
United States, a mere four-hour drive from the Arizona/
Mexico border. People vacationing to San Carlos come for the beach lifestyle,
resorts and recreation.
Boating
San Carlos is ideal for boating. The town has two well-developed marinas. There are paved launch ramps, facilities for dry storage and fuel docks. Staff at the marina offer boat repair and maintenance. The rates for slip rentals are reasonable. You can also rent a kayak for exploring San Carlos by water.
Water Sports
Fishing is a popular activity in San Carlos, and there are several annual fishing tournaments to keep things interesting, such as the Ladies International Fishing Tournament in May and, in October, the yearly Cantina Cup International Game Fish Tournament. You can charter a fishing boat for a half day or take a ride on a luxury yacht for snorkeling and fly fishing. Other popular water sports include scuba diving, windsurfing and jet-skiing.
Land Recreation
After you're out of the water, there are still plenty of ways to get your exercise in San Carlos. Try golfing at San Carlos Country Club, an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Peter Dye. Other people hit the tennis courts included at many of the resorts. Take a trip out of town toward Miramar and check out Delfinario Sonora, an educational facility for observing dolphins and sea lions.
Shopping
Shopping is a major sport in Mexico, whether it's for folk art, souvenirs or fresh produce. The small boutiques in the commercial districts carry wrought iron artwork, regional sweets, handmade jewelry, pinatas, cigars, painted tiles, glassware and beach clothing.
