The Gran Bahia Principe Coba at night
The Gran Bahia Principe Coba is part of the Gran Bahia
resort complex in Akumal,
Mexico. Gran Bahia has three
resorts adjacent to one another, each of which is all-inclusive. That means that all of the typical charges, such as meals, drinks, and alcoholic beverages are included in the pre-paid price of the trip. The price includes most of the staff gratuities. The Akumal resort complex includes the Gran Bahia Principe Coba, Gran Bahía Príncipe Akumal, and the Gran Bahía Príncipe Tulum.
Insider Tips
The Gran Bahia Principe Coba is one of the most popular resorts along the Riviera Maya. Because there are two other resorts on the grounds, the all-inclusive packages include the other two resorts. Guests can eat, drink and enjoy the amenities at all of the resorts on the grounds without paying to stay at those hotels. Freeform pools are interconnected, melding the resorts into a single, cohesive entity. The resorts all offer excellent dining with a wide range of cuisines, and the ingredients are all of the highest quality. Except at the a la carte restaurants such as Mikado, there are seating times for meals. That means that if guests don't eat during defined times, such as before 10:30 a.m. for breakfast, guests may have to eat at the snack bar, which offers lower quality food.
The rooms at the Coba are exceptionally roomy by hotel standards. All of the rooms at the Coba are Junior Suites, situated in buildings that are no more than three stories tall. Each room at the Coba has and ensuite bath, and high quality toiletries are provided. Guests may want to take advantage of the in-room safes, but there is a small fee for its use. The Coba is not a business traveler's destination, though, and travelers who hope for wireless high-speed internet will be disappointed. Internet access is dial-up only, with a small surcharge for use. Valuables should be stored in the hotel safe, a feature that many experienced travelers know but seldom use. Guests may have trouble communicating with some staff-members such as housekeeping, though the ones most concerned with public interaction, such as concierge and front desk staff, do speak English fluently.
Pros and Cons
While guests can use the amenities at all three resorts, the resorts are not equal in terms of space and room quality. Customers cannot switch from one resort to the next, and must use the rooms that they've booked. Guests don't have much in the way of room choice at the Coba, since all of the rooms are Junior Suites. The room layouts are nearly identical in each room, though the ocean-view rooms do have larger balconies. Perhaps the biggest advantage that the Coba has is its choice of beds. The beds at the Coba are covered in high thread-count sheets and the ocean breeze and the sound of the ocean lull guests to sleep in record time. One disadvantage from which the hotel suffers, though, is that customers must stick to a well-defined schedule if they plan to eat at the on-site restaurants. Because the restaurants adhere to a strict schedule, guests who miss a seating at the restaurant of their chose will be relegated to eating at the on-site snack bars. The food at the on-site snack bars is typical snack-food fare, including sodas and fruit. Because the food sits out, the quality suffers. The resort's a la carte restaurants serve good quality meals. The staff goes above and beyond the call of duty when entertaining guests.
Bottom Line
The Gran Bahia Principe Coba is one of the most popular resorts on the Riviera Maya. It's designed to be fun for the whole family. Guests will enjoy the pools and the excellent hospitality from the staff, since the staff at the resort complex is extremely friendly. Guests who are accustomed to the excellent hospitality at Mexican resorts will be astonished at the extremes to which the staff at the Coba take their guest relations. Guests will have a great time at the Principe Coba.
