Tabasco is a state in the southern part of Mexico. It is bordered by Veracruz, Chiapas, Campeche and the Gulf of Mexico. The region is dense with rainforests, as well as rivers and waterfalls. Though it is prone to flooding, the area does have many natural and non-natural landmarks that have attracted tourists from around the world.
Identification

The state of Tabasco is divided into 17 different municipalities. These municipalities lie within four different zones: the Chontalpa, the Center, the Sierra and the River.

Size

The state ranks 20th in population among Mexican states, with just under 2 million inhabitants. The population is spread over nearly 10,000 square feet of land.

Government

The government of Tabasco consists of three powers: the executive, the judiciary and the legislative. The powers are split between a six-year governor, a 35-deputy legislature and the Superior Court of Justice.

Regions

The regions of Tabasco are divided by the Grijalva and the Usumacinta Rivers. The coastal Tabasco Plain dominates the state with heavy rainfall and rainforests.

Flooding

Due to heavy rainfall and large rivers, flooding has been a large part of Tabasco's natural history. In 2007, one particularly large flood covered nearly half of the state's land area, affecting over 1 million residents.

Ruins

Ruins from ancient Mayan civilizations make up many of the attractions of this region. The Olmec ruins of La Venta and the Mayan ruins of Comalcalco are among the most legendary in the state.

Villahermosa

Villahermosa, the capital of the state, is home to most of the important thoroughfares of the state, as well as its airport, Carlos Rovirosa Perez International Airport.
