Cozumel's Coastline
Cozumel is a small island off the coast of
Mexico but, despite its size, offers many attractions that make it a destination for all ages. From beautiful
beaches, snorkeling and scuba diving to great shopping opportunities and even ecological preserves, Cozumel is sure to have something of interest to you.
Wows and Woes
Cozumel's Low-Lying Jungles
Cozumel has numerous high-end resorts, but you don't have to stay at the resorts to buy access to the beaches. Prices are low and it usually includes snorkel gear and other water toys. The Punta Sur Eco park is a must-see for any visitor and, since it is out of the way, its beaches are usually less crowded.
There is only one major city on Cozumel, which means most of the island is uninhabited and some areas are extremely impoverished. Make sure to stay on the beaten path and explore the jungles with a guide or with caution.
Insider Tips
A Cozumel Street Performer
Shopping on Cozumel is a daily adventure. Whether you are in the area by cruise ship or by plane, wait to shop on afternoons that a cruise ship is in port. You will see prices fall drastically in the hour or two before the cruise ships depart, as the merchants are trying to squeeze the guests for a few last dollars. Make sure to barter, especially during this time, to get the best deals.
Author's Most Memorable Moment
An ancient Mayan ruin on Cozumel
On one of my first trips to Cozumel, my wife and I took an authentic Mexican cooking class at the Playa Mia beach resort. The class concentrated on showing us the real Mexico, and not the tacos and burritos of America. We learned to cook grouper in a mango sauce and a wonderful Mexican dessert that we still cook today, years later.
Bottom Line
The Cozumel Lighthouse
Cozumel is extremely relaxing and offers some wonderful shopping and snorkeling activities. However, you can do most everything Cozumel has to offer in two or three days, so plan accordingly.
