Cabo San Lucas Travel Tips
Cabo San Lucas is located on the southern most point of the Baja, California, peninsula and sits between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Made famous by its El Arco de Cabo San Lucas, the definitive arch sets a picturesque scene for a relaxing vacation. But Cabo San Lucas boasts more than just a pretty place. There is plenty to do, from shopping to water sports and horseback riding. Cabo San Lucas is a port city that has a bustling nightlife and a plethora of dining options. This Mexican destination is an all-in-one vacation destination for all.
Bring Your Passport
Cabo San Lucas is located in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, and a passport is required for entry. You will also be given a tourist card to sign stating that you are only in Mexico for tourism and will be staying more than 72 hours. You must retain your half of the card, so keep it somewhere safe. Mexican customs are fairly simple to get through, but you can be randomly selected to have your suitcase searched. Allow extra time to get through customs.
Enjoy the Beach, but Don't Expect to Swim
While the beaches are a popular refuge from crowded pools, many of them advise against swimming in the choppy waters of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. There is a powerful undertow from these waters, and people can drown if they aren't careful. Also, the waters are known for jellyfish and large rock formations that can cause injury to swimmers. Stay in the pools for swimming.
Getting Around Can Be Pricey
It is strongly recommended to check with your hotel in advance to see if it offers a free shuttle from the airport. Taxis can cost a whopping $80 one way and some will even heckle you to prepay for your trip back. Aside from hotel shuttles, you can rent a car or take the public bus for a mere $2.
Nightlife Is Fun But Is Not for Everyone
Cabo San Lucas boasts bars and the famous Cabo Wabo Cantina. Because the city is a revolving door for cruise ships and tourists alike, those looking for a quiet romantic getaway may need to look elsewhere. Within the Los Cabos region sits a smaller, quieter city of San Jose del Cabo. The sister city sits a short 20 miles from Cabo San Lucas. The sleepier town still has beachfront resorts, is close to a wildlife refuge and has a busy downtown plaza for shopping and dining. Branch out and stay farther from Cabo San Lucas for a quieter vacation.
