Attractions in Cancun, Mexico
Cancun is considered by many to be a vacationer's paradise with something for everyone. The great
beaches, lively entertainment, awesome
resorts and plentiful restaurants are enough to suit most tastes. But for those who want to expand their horizons a bit there are several attractions unique to Cancun that are certainly worth considering. All will provide you with a feel for the region and its culture, and leave you with lifelong memories.
Mayan Culture
There are several Mayan ruins worth exploring within a few minutes of Cancun. The Ruinas del Ray are located near the Hilton Cancun golf course and offer visitors views of what an ancient Mayan fishing village once looked like.
Day trips offered by tour operators within many Cancun resorts include visits to more impressive ruins such as Tulum or Chichen Itza. The ruins at Tulum are approximately an hour from Cancun and feature an oceanside view of several temples. The ruins of Chichen Itza are spectacular, but prepare to hoof it as a temple is more than 75 feet high.
In addition to a wild bird aviary and a sea turtle aquarium, Xcaret has authentic Mayan ruins to explore as well. The park also has nighttime Mexican dance and music performances.
Water Fun
Aquaworld's marina offers scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing off its pristine white beach. The attraction also features jungle tours on two-seater boats.
Swim with the dolphins and snorkel with sting rays at the Parque Nizuc, a Wet 'n' Wild water park complete with slides and swimming pools.
Bullfighting
Plaza de Toros features weekly bullfights. Prior to the bullfight, spectators are entertained with folkloric dances and a show by Mexican cowboys known as charros. If you can't stand the sight of blood, this attraction may not be for you since the fight does not end until the bull has been fatally wounded.
