Sorrento, Italy, is a small city in southern Italy with fewer than 17,000 citizens. The town can be reached easily from Naples and Pompeii. Although it is not a huge tourist destination in Italy, it is a popular spot for travelers to go through and spend time while vacationing in these areas. Outside of the fact that it has beautiful vistas of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, Sorrento is famous in its own right.
Sorrento Lemon Trees
Sorrento lemons are famous for being exceptionally aromatic and rich in flavor. The lemons are grown in a specific way, with the limbs supported by 10-foot-high trellises. These limbs are protected from the elements by straw mats that are suspended above them. This helps to ensure that the fruit ripens evenly and is protected from the weather.
The Sorrento Lemon
All lemons are not created equal. Sorrento lemons are known for being rather large, usually no smaller than 2.8 ounces. The peels to these lemons are extremely pungent and brightly colored. The pulp is also brightly colored and is known for producing a great deal of juice, a factor used to evaluate how high the quality of any lemon is. Although they are grown all year long, the months between May and October yield the greatest amount of high-quality fruit.
Sorrento's Limoncello
As Sorrento is known for its high-quality lemons, it is also known for its delicious limoncello. Limoncello is a type of lemon liqueur that is not made from lemon juice but lemon rinds. Since no juice is involved in the creation of limoncello, it is not sour but does have a lemon flavor to it. In the creation of Sorrentine limoncello, Sorrento lemon rinds are combined with water, sugar and alcohol. The liqueur is colored bright yellow. Sorrentine lemons are known for their flavorful peeling, and since that is one of the chief ingredients in limoncello liqueur, Sorrentine limoncello is highly regarded and has made Sorrento famous around the world.
