Whether you come for the view or for the attractions, this Scottish island is a unique vacation spot. Because of its proximity to other Scottish islands and to Scotland, it would make a nice day trip or part of a longer vacation.
Location
Eday is one of the many islands that form what is called the Orkney Islands in the northern part of the United Kingdom, on the northern side of Scotland. It covers 11 square miles and is the ninth largest island in Orkney. Eday is a well-known tourist attraction in the United Kingdom.
How to Get There
To get to Eday, you must first travel by ferry to Stromness from Scrabster with NorthLink Ferries and then take the Orkney ferries or an islander plane from Kirkwall Airport. Or you can travel to Kirkwall from either Aberdeen or Lerwick with NorthLink Ferries. At Hatson, you can take the North Isles Ferry or the islander plane.
Attractions
There are five main attractions that Eday offers. The stone setter is a gigantic standing stone that looks like a hand. Carrick house is the house of Pirate Gow, who was captured there in the 18th century. Vinquoy Chambered Cairn is over three meters high. Mill loch hide is a great bird watching spot. Finally, the Red Head is a great sea cliff on the northern side of the island.
The Walks
Eday offers a very great opportunity for walking. If you want to enjoy all the wonderful sights that Eday offers, you have to follow the Heritage Walk that takes you to the north of the island. If you want to see the southern parts of the Eday, you have to follow the Warness walk. There are signposts on both walks.
Photo Opportunities
Once you arrive at the Eday airfield, you'll see some wonderful photo opportunities. Another name for this airfield is London Airport, which also has helpful signposts.
