Things to Do in Sorrento Italy

Italy is a European country. The Italian territory extends from the hills of the dolomites to the shores of the Gulf of Taranto on the Ionian Sea. In between lies some of the world's most famous scenery, religious shrines and artwork of great historical importance. There are many lovely places to visit in Italy. One of the very loveliest is the port town of Sorrento on the well beloved and well traveled Amalfi Coast. Sorrento has many attractions for the traveler.
Museo Correale di Terranova

The Museo Correale di Terranova is located on the Via Correale just north of the main Sorrentine plaza of Piazza Tasso. The Museum was a former palace and has a very interesting decorative exterior. The Museum presently houses a collection of antiques, ancient statues and Italian art. The collection specialty is a display of intarsia or pieces made with thin pieces of wood in a pleasing pattern. The museum also includes very fine gardens filled with fragrant flowers when you can picnic for an hour or two.

Hiking

Sorrento is a town perched at the edge of a hill. Right behind the town center of Sorrento lie some of the best hill trails in Italy. Hiking through the hills of Sorrento can offer visitors views that extend all the way to the Bay of Naples and even to the offshore island of Capri. The air tends to be cooler there as well. Contact the local tourist office near the port section of Sorrento for information about trails and even tours. Trails are well marked and well traveled even on hotter days. This can be a great way to cool off on a hot summer day if your hotel does not have a pool.

Shopping

At the heart of Sorrento are many different shops offering home made arts and crafts. Many Sorrentine shops specialize in the local art of ornate pottery making. Others offer visitors local home made food and drink. The pleasant climate allows citrus fruits such as lemons to grow year round. Locals bottle limoncello, the much admired lemon flavored liquor, for sampling. Lemons also form the basis for pastries and cakes.
