Things to Do in Lake Como, Italy

Lake Como (known as Lago di Como in Italian), in Lombardy, Italy, is a popular tourist destination. It is one of Europe's deepest lakes, and has glacial origins. Many people flock to Lake Como due to its natural beauty and abundance of exciting recreational activities. There is no shortage of things to do and see while vacationing in Lake Como.

Menaggio is a tiny resort on the Lake Como shores. It offers a golf course, several mountain hiking paths (including a 9-kilometer walk up Monte Grona) and water-skiing, swimming and riding opportunities. It is also a great place for sight-seeing, with its lakeshore full of flowers and trees and majestic mountain views.

Bellagio is often referred to as "the pearl of the lake," and is the home to many gorgeous villas. Many people access Bellagio via ferry rides from other lakeside cities. It is by far the most well-known Lake Como resort area. A sense of tranquility pervades the area, making it perfect for vacationers who enjoy taking leisurely strolls. There are also a lot of seasonal recreational activities to do in Bellagio, including water sports in the summer and skiing and snowboarding in the wintertime.

Old Town

Old Town, a walled area known for its historic buildings, is made up of squares consisting of cafes and restaurants. There are a lot of walking paths and hiking trails in and around Old Town. The Piazza San Fedele is a vibrant and bustling square that is composed of many buildings that are more than 400 years old. Be sure to check out the Porta Vittoria, which is a magnificent standing tower.

Villa del Balbianello

Villa del Balbianello is nestled inside of the idyllic village of Lenno, and has an unusual story in that it was a set for one of the "Star Wars" films. It was constructed in 1787 and is known for its sophisticated terraced gardens. An Italian explorer named Guido Monzino purchased it in 1974, and then proceeded to fill it up with a vast collection of relics and artifacts he came across on his many journeys and expeditions.
