How to Plan a Trip to Europe

Europe is a fascinating area for its cultural, historical and geographical attractions. It contains a tremendous array of languages and peoples, as well as many wonderful cities. A well planed trip to Europe could create the memories of a lifetime. Following these simple step-by-step instructions you can plan a fun and informative trip to Europe in little time.

  • Guide books to Europe that include hotel, rental car, cultural attractions and city information
  • A road atlas of Europe
  • Access to reservation services or travel reservation web sites
Step 1

Ask yourself what areas or attractions you would like to see while in Europe. Many people travel to Europe to see the great sights of the west such as the Eiffel tower, Big Ben, and the Acropolis. Others prefer the back roads and less traveled spots in the east or north.

Step 2

Determine how much time you would like to spend in Europe. If you do not have a great deal of time to spend then you should plan to travel in only one region. Although Europe is not geographically large, there is so much to see that you cannot take it all in during a short time. For short vacations, pick a single city or country. You can spread out longer journeys over multiple countries and areas.

Step 3

Allow the attractions you would like to see to determine the nature of your trip. Plan the trip on an atlas, providing plenty of time for rests, food stops and relaxation. Spend the most time in the areas in which you are interested. If you are more interested in wandering, map out several different routes to take and allow plenty of time.

Step 4

If you will be driving, familiarize yourself with the roads and routes you will be taking. If Googlemaps or Mapquest provides step-by-step instructions for traveling in the region, obtain directions. Remember to plan stops for food, rest and gas.

Step 5

Make travel arrangements far in advance. You'll need to make all air, car and train reservations far in advance. Major European cities are extremely busy, especially during the summer travel months. Book hotels, in particular, several months in advance.

Step 6

Make all necessary national and international travel arrangements, such as obtaining a passport. Be sure to research any specific national requirements that might be in place for a country in which you will be traveling.

Step 7

Bring plenty of cash, but keep a good portion of your money in the form of traveler's checks. Distribute your money, traveler's checks and credit cards throughout your luggage. Be cautious walking outdoors at night, especially in cities.
