German Travel Requirements

For trips shorter than 90 days, citizens of the United States are not required to obtain a visa prior to visiting Germany. There are several countries, however, that do have a visa requirement prior to visiting Germany, and applications can be processed both in the U.S. and abroad.
Germany has several different visa types to suit the nature of your visit including: business, employment, permanent residence, relatives/friends, study, tourist and airport transit visas.
A tourist visa would be the most appropriate visa for leisure travel and is what I've explained here. Information and specific requirements for the other visa types can be found on the German Missions in the US website (see resources below).
Conditions of Entry

Without a visa visitors cannot stay more than three months within every 6 month period, or become gainfully employed during their stay. Select neighboring countries have exemptions to this rule, see the German Missions in the US website for an updated list of information about exemptions and the countries to which they apply.
