Fun Things to Do in London England

Entertaining activities abound in London; there's something for everyone. Once you've decided on your priorities for your own personal "must-sees," get a map of the Underground and buses, and use public transportation to easily transport yourself to all of the most popular attractions. Things you may want to put on your list include watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, viewing the city from the London Eye, taking a trip up the Tower of London, choosing from the many museums in the city and, for an eclectic shopping experience, strolling through the Portobello Market.
Changing of the Guard

A traditional stop for all first-time visitors to London is the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Try to visit on a day when there will be a full ceremony (see Resources). On these days, you will get to hear the regimental band, see soldiers on horseback and watch guards wearing the traditional uniforms. Don't forget to bring your camera along to take a photo of yourself with the Palace in the background.

The London Eye

When the view is not obscured by clouds, you can see nearly 25 miles from the top of the London Eye, the world's largest observation wheel. You make a half-hour ride in a pod, from which you'll see all over the city, taking in some well-known London tourist spots. The London Eye is open year-round, with longer hours during the summer.

The Tower of London

Don't miss the tour of the White Tower, and stop in at the Tower Green, which was the site of executions for high-ranking prisoners. See the Crown Jewels, the Prisoners' Exhibition, and don't forget to take a look at the Castle's ravens, one of the most popular attractions at the Tower.

Museums

Take your choice from the many London museums visited by thousands of tourists each year. For fans of modern art, try the Tate Modern; for a look at British antiquities and the Rosetta Stone, go to the British Museum; the National Gallery features Renaissance art; and you can see a large collection of Renaissance sculpture at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Portobello Road Market

This sprawling market stretches for 2 miles, and you'll find everything from antiques and artwork to "junque," such as you might come across at an American garage sale. You'll also find some cafes, where you can refresh yourself and continue on your trek for the perfect souvenir. Plan to arrive early on Saturday morning.
