The days of the smoky Parisian cafes and bars often written about in literature have cleared up as the 21st century has advanced. The French have long been associated with smoking. It has been a part of the culture since tobacco's first appearance in
Europe. This long history of smoking has come with the usual health problems associated with tobacco, and finally, a ban on smoking in public.
How Many Smoke
In France, it is estimated that 14 million people smoke, out of a population of just over 65 million.
Number One Killer
Smoking is the number one killer of adults in France.
Smoking Related Deaths
Each year, 66,000 people die in France as a result of smoking.
Smoking Ban
On January 1, 2008, smoking was banned in all public places.
Since the Ban
Since the smoking ban, there has been a 15 percent decrease in hospital admissions for heart attack and strokes.
