Facts About the Neuschwanstein Castle
The Neuschwanstein Castle, located in the Bavarian Alps of Germany and overlooking the Hohenschwangau Valley, was the private retreat of the shy and eccentric King Ludwig II. A popular tourist site, this castle has been visited by more than 50 million people.
Construction

The foundation was laid in 1869 and was still incomplete by the time of Ludwig's death in 1886. Although the castle appears medieval, it was actually very modern for its time, with running water, central heating and automatic flushing toilets.

Design

The castle was designed by theatrical designer Christian Jank and worked on by a number of artists to create the intricate wood carvings and frescos seen throughout the castle.

Castle Tours

Up to 6,000 people visit the castle per day in the summer. Guided tours are available with advance-ticket purchase only, and is a 40-minute walk from the ticket center. Either a shuttle bus or horse carriage is available for a small fee.

Price

The Neuschwanstein Castle is open all year, except major holidays. Adult tickets are 9 EUR and children under 18 are free.

Hours of Operation

Tours operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from April through September, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the rest of the year.
