About European River Cruises
A comfortable riverboat cruise is a great way to get a whirlwind tour of
Europe without ever having to move your luggage. You have a knowledgeable staff available to answer questions along the way, and there is the added luxury of an all-inclusive vacation package, with most meals, entertainment and other activities offered on the boat.
Rivers and Regions
The Danube, Rhine, Elbe and Main rivers are some of the most popular for cruising, but any waterway that is large enough is a possibility. Routes in Eastern Europe and Russia have been added recently, and the far reaches of Western Europe are also a possibility. Hurtigruten has put together a 14-day itinerary that covers many of Western Europe's most prized sites.
Cities
River cruises can take travelers to the most famous and largest capitals of Europe, including Paris, London, Budapest, Amsterdam, Vienna and Bratislava. Some cruise schedules start or end in these metropolises, which makes it easy explore before or after your cruise.
Seasons
River cruises are available year-round. Christmas season adventures through Germany are fairly common, with the legendary Christmas markets a huge draw. In autumn, colorful leaves delight passengers as do blooming flower fields in spring.
Themes
Oftentimes, cruises offer themed voyages, such as tulips, wine, beer, adventure, shopping and cooking. Euro River Cruises has "Tulip Time" journeys that travel through Holland and Belgium's fields at peak blooming time every spring. Tauck also has several theme options in their lineup.
Length and Price
Generally river cruises in Europe last from three days to three weeks. Prices vary based on the length of the cruise and which luxuries are offered. Before booking, check to see which expenses are included in the price. Meals usually are, but flights may not be included or may be priced from limited U.S. cities.
Side Trips
Important landmarks or cities that are near the rivers may be included in the cruising schedule. The beaches of Normandy is a day tour on one of Viking River Cruises' France routes, while Prague is a jaunt off of their Elbe River tour. Side trips that venture away from the river are often optional and may cost an additional fee.
