The Best Places to Travel in Europe in Winter

The European continent continues to remain a tremendously popular travel destination. Many travelers seek out the area's religious and cultural treasures each year. One of the most popular times to travel to Europe is during the summer, when people are often easily able to obtain time off work. However travel during a less popular season such as winter can also offer the tourist many rewards. Here are some places to consider during that time frame.
Southern France

The South of France is an ideal place to visit in during winter. Southern France consists of the French coastline as well inland areas such as the Basque region and Provence. Visiting this area during the winter months has several advantages. The area is less popular during winter months thus making it easier to see and enjoy popular local attractions such as the Chagall Museum in Nice. Temperatures drop to the mid-60s thus making it very pleasant to be outside. Visitors can stroll down the Boulevard des Anglais in Nice and enjoy local specialties such as mussels. A traveler can explore the Roman amphitheater in Arles without enduring summer heat, walk the crenellated heights of the walled city of Avignon peacefully or climbs the steps of Eze without pausing for a frequent drink. Some businesses shut down during this less popular time frame so inquire about accommodations and restaurants before you leave.

Venetian Vistas

Visit the Italian city of Venice. Venice is widely regarded as one of the world's most beautiful places. The city is perched on a series of islands interconnected by graceful bridges and many staircases. Travelers get around either by walking or by boat. Winter is an excellent time to visit. Average high temperatures typically climb into the mid-40s during this time frame, making walking refreshing and brisk. Snow is rare but light when it does happen. In the summer months, the city's much celebrated canals may overflow with sanitation problems thus creating an unpleasant smell for visitors. This problem is much rarer during the winter months. Winter is also a less popular time to visit. This means that prices can drop as much as 50 percent on hotel rooms and even food. Museums and other attractions such as churches still remain open during this time.

German Holiday

Travel to Germany. Visitors will find fascinating cities, quaint villages and one of Europe's oldest and richest cultures. Visiting Germany in the winter offers many different pleasures. Snow is frequent, making fairytale villages look even prettier. Many attractions such as the Museum of Greek and Roman Antiquities in Berlin are a perfect way to spend a cold winter day.
