The Best Places to Travel in Europe in February

Enticed by pleasant weather, travelers flock to Europe during the spring and summer seasons. Others, fearful of letting unused vacation days expire at the end of the calendar year, celebrate the winter holidays in Europe. The month of February, stuck somewhere in the middle, is often neglected by European visitors. For shame too, since there's plenty to see and do. So, if you need a romantic getaway, a week of partying hard Carnival style, or simply want to do some sight-seeing but avoid the tourist crowds, Europe may be your ideal February destination.
A City Celebrating Carnival

February means Carnival in Europe. And Carnival means booze, fireworks, delicious food, elaborate processions, masquerades and street parties that stretch into the early morning. While the Carnival festivities in Europe don't quite meet Rio de Janeiro proportions, the Pre-Lenten celebrations in Europe are not to miss. So be sure to visit a city in Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Portugal or Italy during the celebration. No matter where your Eurotrip itinerary in February leads you, there is bound to be a Carnival party nearby.

Paris, France

What better place for couples to spend Valentine's Day than the most romantic city on earth? Paris is chilly in February, too, so love birds will have to cozy up. Catch a cabaret show together, stroll the Champs-Élysées hand-in-hand or simply enjoy Parisian wine and cheese with your "amour" in the hotel. A dinner cruise on the Seine River or a bread baking class for two make great Valentine's Day gifts. Since Paris is a hot spot for doting couples this time of year, plan ahead by booking your double beds and making dinner reservations in advance.

Southern Europe

If you can't handle the chill, go south. While the popular tourist destinations in places like the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland and Holland haven't quite thawed out yet, there is plenty to do and see in the more moderate temperatures of Southern Europe. Greece, southern Italy and southern Spain enjoy warmer (but not warm) weather this time of year. And since there are not many tourists this time of year, you can enjoy all the popular attractions without the crowds.
