Rome has a multitude of tourist attractions and things to see, but if you are in the city for several weeks, or if you have been to Rome before, consider venturing out pf the city on one of several exciting day trips. You can either find your own way by car or train, or you can purchase a guided excursion from a number of tour companies.
Pompeii
See and walk around the remains of Pompeii, the ancient Roman coastal city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Pompeii is one of the world's archeological treasures and offers you the opportunity to see the remains of ancient Roman life frozen in time. Many tour companies offer a combined trip to Pompeii and Naples.
Florence
Be sure not to miss Florence, the center of the Renaissance. The magnificent Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo) makes the city worth visiting. Florence is rich in history and culture, and here you can see Michelangelo's David, as well as buildings designed by Giotto and Botticelli.
Wine Tasting Tour
If you are more into tasting rather than seeing, a tour through Italy's Frascati wine country and tasting sessions will be right up your alley. Pair the wine tasting with a food tour through Tuscany and Umbria, sampling cheeses, meats and wines, for the perfect combination of gastronomical pleasure.
Hadrian's Villa
If you are interested in a half-day tour, consider going to the villa of the Emperor Hadrian. Hadrian, of fame for "Hadrian's Wall," which was built as the northernmost European border of the empire across England, built the villa in the style of buildings he admired from travels in Greece and Egypt. The actual villa is a mere ruined shadow of its former glory, but the accompanying gardens are spectacular.
