Amsterdam is capital of The Netherlands, and famed as a diamond capital. It is a bustling business center in addition to a tourist mecca. Besides the infamous Red Light district and coffee shops, Amsterdam also boasts world-class hotels and some truly beautiful museums. You can walk along quaint canals and take in a day of shopping at everything from art galleries to H&M.
Rijksmuseum
Containing not only a rich collection of furniture and textile pieces, the Rijksmuseum boasts "The Night Watch" by Rembrandt. The painting is worthily known as one of the masterpieces of the 17th century. Children are welcome, with special exhibits and features focused on children six to 12 years of age.
Van Gogh
The Van Gogh museum offers an opportunity to see a master's talent in its entirety. The collection is focused exclusively on Van Gogh's works and is arranged in such a manner that you can see his rise in artisanship and his descent into madness.
Tulips
Tulips are not only a great gift to give to your friends back home, they provide a wonderful reminder of your trip. Simply look for ones labeled as acceptable to be imported to the U.S. Most sellers bundle tulips bulbs at about 10 for 3 euros.
Hotels
Amsterdam has a wide range of hotels to offer. Hilton, Marriott and Intercontinental all maintain major hotels in the city as do less expensive options such as Novotel. In 2007, the average price for a hotel in Amsterdam was $180, according to Hotels.com's Hotel Price Index.
Considerations
The Red Light District has been significantly toned down in Amsterdam. While still legal, the district has become more of a tourist attraction in recent years. Similarly, coffee shops that sell cannabis have become less free in their practices as Amsterdam.
