Facts on Panama

Panama is located in Central America, sits on an isthmus and connects South and North America. It is perhaps best known for the Panama Canal, a man-made structure that connects the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Panama was first settled in the 16th century by the Spanish and was under Spain's control until 1821, when it joined the Republic of Gran Colombia, consisting of Venezuela, Ecuador,
Columbia and Panama. In 1830, that union was dissolved and Panama decided to remain a part of Columbia until 1903, when it seceded and gained its independence.

The original constitution took effect on Oct. 11, 1972.

Economy

Panama's economy depends on developed services, including tourism and the operation of the Panama Canal.

Major Exports

Panama's primary export is bananas, but also includes coffee, shrimp, sugar and clothing.

Highest Point

Panama's highest point, Volcan Baru, is 3,475 meters above sea level and, on a clear day, both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans can be seen from the peak.

Official Language

Spanish is the official language, but English is spoken throughout the country.
