Maya Beach Resort
The Maya
beach resort is a charming, laid-back hotel catering more to travelers over tourists. It's not designed for luxury; it's a part of the beautiful nature of Belize. The hotel is perfect for relaxation, snorkeling, kayaking and bike riding. It's run by a husband-and-wife team who wants to take you away from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind and show you peace in paradise.
Wows and Woes
This hotel is an absolute deal, with rooms for a week for as low as $350 US.
The hotel restaurant isn't always open when you'd like something to eat, and there isn't much else around.
Insider Tips
Borrow one of their free kayaks and paddle out to one of the small islands with a picnic.
Author's Most Memorable Moment
I grew up kayaking, and my favorite thing about being in a tiny boat in the middle of a gigantic sea is to realize how small man can be in perspective to nature. Part of the way through my course toward a local island, a big bump popped up next to me. It was a beautiful manatee, smiling.
Bottom Line
The Maya Beach Resort is off the beaten path and perfect for someone who is happy with casual versus fancy.
