Interesting Places in Honduras
Honduras is located in the heart of
Central America, bordered by Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, the Pacific Ocean and the
Caribbean Sea. This tiny nation of 7 million people is home to some great tourist attractions. Scenic
beaches and rugged mountains offer a variety of options for visitors looking to get in touch with nature. Others will enjoy the stunning ruins of the ancient Maya civilization and the colonial architecture left by the conquistadors.
The Copan Ruins
The Copan Ruins are a collection of ancient Mayan structures in the western part of Honduras. Copan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, visitors will find pyramids, plazas, tombs, palaces, an acropolis, and intricate hieroglyphics carved into stone sculptures by the Mayans. This was once the most important city in the southern part of the Mayan Empire. Nowadays, thousands of tourists pass through Copan to catch a glimpse of the ruins.
The Town of Gracias
Gracias is a quiet colonial-style town, also in the western region of Honduras. The cobblestone streets and old churches are charming, but that is not the only reason to visit. This town serves as a jump off point for outings to el Parque Nacional Montaña de Celaque, a popular national park. The dense cloud forest here gives way to the nation's mountain highest peak, El Cerro de las Minas (2849 meters altitude). Tourists can hire a guide to take them on a trek up the mountain over the course of one or two days while camping in the park.
The Bay Islands
Scuba diving on the Bay Islands is a fun outing for outdoor enthusiasts. The islands of Roatán, Utila and Guanaja are situated along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. This is the second biggest coral reef on the planet. Pirates used to inhabit these islands, attacking Spanish and British ships on the Caribbean Sea. Even if you do not want to scuba dive, Roatán is a larger island which has other attractions. Visit the iguana farms and botanical gardens or relax on the bay and enjoy some fresh seafood.
