Despite its relatively small size, Belize is one of
Central America's most diverse and prosperous nations, with a civilization heavily influenced by the
Caribbean, former colonizer Great Britain and its Central American roots. Every year, thousands of tourists flock to this tropical destination for its beautiful
beaches, rain forest, Mayan ruins and fascinating culture.
Geography
Belize is a coastal nation found along the Caribbean side of Central America, with Mexico as its neighbor to the north and bordering Guatemala to the east and south. Alongside its Caribbean coastline, there is a large coral reef offering snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities, and approximately 450 small islands. Many hotels and vacation spots are found along the coast, as it is considered one of the most scenic areas in Belize.
Accommodations
There are several different types of lodging for vacationers in Belize, including beach-side resorts, Spanish-style hotels, and cozy bed and breakfast inns nestled amidst striking views of the Belizean coast, isles, or rain forest. Summer and winter time are the busiest tourist seasons in Belize, so hotel prices tend to rise during these periods.
History
Mayan natives were the original inhabitants of Belize, and were joined in the 16th century by Spanish explorers who eventually fled the country due to Mayan opposition. Many visitors to Belize are drawn to the wealth of Mayan ruins and museums found throughout the country.
Features
vacations in Belize can range from low-key and relaxing lounging on the country's white sand beaches and tropical keys to adventuresome exploring of reefs, rain forests and Mayan ruins.
Fun Fact
English-speakers planning a trip to Belize can take comfort in the fact that it is the only Central American nation where English is the official language, since it was ruled for decades by Great Britain.
