Costa Rica Travel Guide

Costa Rica is a beautiful Central American country rife with opportunities for travelers. Often considered the birthplace of eco-tourism, a trip to Costa Rica offers you the chance to hike through a rain forest, tour a coffee plantation, birdwatch, catch some sun at the beach, or surf the waves, among other activities. Visiting Costa Rica is a great way to introduce yourself to the Central American way of life.
Getting There

Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santamaría is the major airport that serves Costa Rica. It is located just outside the capital city of San Jose.

Getting Around

Costa Rica has an extensive bus system that can get you to nearly everywhere in the country. You can also rent a car in San Jose and other major tourist destinations, though it can be an expensive option. To rent a car you will need a passport, valid driver's license, and credit card.

Places to See

Popular destinations in Costa Rica include Arenal volcano (and the Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal resort (hot springs) located at its base), Monteverde and Santa Elena Biological Reserves, Tortuguero National Park, and Manuel Antonio National Park.

Things to Do

Costa Rica is well-known for its eco-tourism activities. Popular activities include hiking or taking a zip-line tour through the rain forest, surfing off the Pacific or Caribbean coasts, visiting nature preserves, and birdwatching.

When to Go

The high season in Costa Rica is from December to April--these months coincide with the dry season. May to November designate the rainy season. For the most part, tourists are fewer and prices are cheaper during this time.
