Facts on Belize

Belize is a Central American country that has been part of a number of different empires during its time, including the Mayan, Spanish and British. It is the only country in the region whose official language is English.
Politics

Belize is still under British control, which means it has a parliamentary democracy modeled after that in Great Britain. The head of state is Queen Elisabeth II of England, though she is represented by a governor of Belize.

Geography

Belize is located in northern Central America. To the east and southeast is the Caribbean sea, to the south is Guatemala and to the northwest is Mexico.

Cycling

One of the most important sporting events in Belize happens to also be one of the most important for the sport of cycling. It is called the Cross Country Cycling Classic, which consists of seven categories and is the perfect race for amateur cyclists.

Economy

Belize has a fairly small economy that is mainly based around agriculture. Crude oil has been found in the area, though its effect on the country's economy has yet to be seen in 2009.

Districts

Belize is divided into six distinct parts, also known as districts. These are the Corozal, Orange Walk, Belize, Cayo, Stann Creek and Toledo districts.
